Abstract Acrylic on Yupo - Untitled

Acrylic (1 fluid, 2-4 Golden High Flow) on Yupo 5x7"
I actually painted these four 5x7" work a few months ago but got distracted with other things. Created after watching Jodi Ohl's DVD "Abstract Painting on  YUPO 10 Techniques".

The first one uses my usual fluid paints, but the other (like the DVD) us Golden High Flow applied with a roller, along with pencils, stencils, stamps, etc.

Faux Encaustic Experiments

Faux Encaustic Experiments using Acrylic Gel Medium

Substrate:  Mont Marte 4x4 inch10 x 10cm Canvas Panel.

Painting: Layers of Gel Medium (Chromacryl Impasto Gel (Paintings 1 & 2 - 2 on left) & Matisse Gel Gloss (painting 3 - right) mixed with small amounts of acrylic paint and applied with a painting knife directly or through a stencil (Painting 1). Each layer had to dry before the next layer was applied to create the visual colour mixing effect.
Matisse Gel Med (Matt Finish) was applied with a painting knife to Painting 1. I think this covered too much, so the other paintings are finished with two coats of Atelier Traditional Satin Finish Varnish.

Abstract Acrylic on canvas panel - Untitled 2017 #4

Acrylic Textured Abstract on canvas panel

Substrate:  Mont Marte 8x10 inch/20.3 x 25.4cm Canvas Panel.

Background:  A basecoat of paynes grey was covered with various gels (Golden Course Molding Paste, Golden Course Molding Paste, & Liquitex Ceramic Stucco) applied with a painting knife to create a textured background. Additional texture was added by pressing plastic canvas (top right) into the stucco/molding paste. When dry, a thin layer of Liquitex Blended Fibres was added (bottom left) and scratched into with a comb.

Painting: Several acrylic paint glazes were applied with Matisse: Hookers Green, Southern Ocean Blue, Indigo Blue (very little), Pthalo Blue, Pthalo Blue + Golden Zinc White, & Golden Buff Titanium (over the blended fibres only).

The round shapes were made using a bottle cap pressed into Chromacryl Impasto Gel + silver and then paynes grey (Jo Sonja). These were too harsh, so I added further glazes to push them back.

Finish: Atelier Traditional Satin Varnish.

Frame:  It needs a frame (without glass). I just haven't decided what type.

Abstract Acrylic on canvas panel - Untitled #3 2017

Acrylic Textured Abstract on canvas panel
Substrate:  Mont Marte 8x10 inch/20.3 x 25.4cm Canvas Panel.

Background:  Texture was created using Golden Crackle Paste (right) , Liquitex Blended Fibres (bottom left) and stamped (didn't keep a good image, but dried interesting), and Liquitex Ceramic Stucco (top left).

Painting: Layers of glazes using (first layer water only then Atelier Glazing Liquid) mixed with Paynes Grey (Jo Sonja), Trans Yellow Oxide (Matisse), Australian Sienna (Matisse), Trans. Venetian Red (Matisse), Trans. Umber (Matisse), Trans Red Oxide (Matisse) & Zinc White (Liquitex).

I didn't like how the fibre paste was looking, so a layer of Gel Medium Matte (Matisse) plus touch of Trans Yellow Oxide was scraped over with a painting knife.

Towards completion a little extra texture was added using Golden Glass Bead Gel (bottom left above fibre paste) and Matisse Black Flakes Hex (over Paynes Grey down centre). When dry Copper (Jo Sonja) was painted over the bead gel (trying to keep only on the beads).

Finish: Atelier Traditional Gloss Varnish.

Frame: A very simple thin black frame.

Abstract Acrylic on canvas panel - Untitled 2017 #2

Acrylic Pour over texture on Canvas Panel 8x10"
Substrate:  Mont Marte 8x10 inch/20.3 x 25.4cm Canvas Panel.

Background:  Various gels (Golden Course Molding Paste, Golden Glass Bead Gel, Liquitex Blended Fibres, and Liquitex Ceramic Stucco) through stencils were used to create a textured background.

Painting: Dirty pours of different viscosity acrylic paints. The thicker paint needed to be pushed around with a painting knife.

Finish: Atelier Traditional Gloss Varnish.

Frame:  It needs a frame (without glass) but both the white (pictured) and black and timber frames I have don't quite look right either. I think I'm going to have make a frame and paint it. Maybe silver or grey or red?

Mixed Media Abstract - Untitled

Mixed Media Abstract - Acrylic Paints, FW and Liquitex Ink pours
I created the texture with Matisse Impasto Medium and Golden Crackle Medium thickly applied with a stencil. When dry this layer was painted with acrylic paints in blues with yellow in the top right. When dry Golden Glass Bead Gel was applied in a few areas.

Subsequent layers of fluid acrylic paint and then acrylic inks until I was happy.

Hear is a close up of the centre left so you can see the different textures and colours flowing better:

Abstract Fluid Acrylic Pouring with ink on Textured Ground #2 - Untitled

After my last few acrylic ink paintings, I ordered more colours from Artifolk and this is the result.

Untitled - poured ink on 12x12x1/2 inch (30x30x1.3cm) stretched canvas textured with painting knife and Matisse Impasto Medium
I just love the way Art Spectrum, Liquitex and FW inks work so well together. Whether you just tip the canvas or blow through a straw the inks make some great and unexpected patterns.

Abstract Fluid Acrylic Pouring with ink on Textured Ground - Untitled

I wanted to see how pouring ink over a textured ground would look. I textured the canvas with a painting knife and Matisse Impasto Medium (MM2).
Untitled - poured ink on 12x12x1/2 inch (30x30x1.3cm) stretched canvas textured with painting knife and Matisse Impasto Medium
I used the same technique and ink as my last painting.

Water was sprayed over canvas then artist acrylic Inks (Art Spectrum Pigmented ink (blue, green, turquoise & white) and Daler Rowney FW in (sun-up blue & genesis green) were poured in lines (I wanted the finished work to be portrait and I worked holding the canvas in the landscape position) and tipped from side to side. I kept doing this until I was happy with the look. I also brushed the sides  with a soft brush so the ink runs would mix roughly.

Abstract - Rough Water

With this painting I was trying a different way of getting colours to flow across the canvas.
"Rough Water" Jo Sonja paints on 8x8x1/2 inch (20x20x1.3cm) stretched canvas
Base was painted with Jo Sonja's background colour Blue Lagoon and left to dry. Canvas was sprayed with water and Jo Sonya Indigo, Ultra Blue Deep, Blue Lagoon (used previously in base) and Titanium White were spread with a painting knife. More water was sprayed, canvas tipped and a straw was used to blow colours around.

The painting has a rough texture to the touch, especially in the bottom left where the paint was thicker.

The painting has been sealed with Atelier Interactive Fast Medium/Fixer.

Blue & White with Green

"Blue & White with Green" acrylic paint on 8x8x1/2 inch (20x20x1.3cm) stretched canvas
The canvas was painted with Jo Sonja background colour in Blue Lagoon. When dry, Matisse Structure acrylics in Titanium White, Jo Sonja acrylics in Ultramarine and Green Lt along with the background colour were spread with a painting knife until I was happy with the result. When dry the green wasn't as strong as I wanted, so I added a few more strokes with the knife.

The painting has been sealed with Atelier Interactive Fast Medium/Fixer.

Mixed Media Abstract - Blue & Green on Gold

"Blue & Green on Gold" acrylic paint, impasto/modelling paste on 8x8x1/2 inch (20x20x1.3cm) stretched canvas
This painting started out as a comparison of Atelier Interactive moulding paste (top left), Matisse Impasto Medium (top right), Matisse Gel Medium (matt) (bottom left) and Matisse Structure Acrylic Transparent Venetian Red (bottom right) using a painting knife.

This was then followed by a layer of Jo Sonja Gold and when dry a glaze (colours mixed with Atelier Interactive Glazing Liquid (gloss) approx. 1:1) of Matisse Emerald. Several glazes of Matisse Structure acrylics in Emerald, Southern Ocean Blue, Cobalt Turquoise, Cobalt Teal, Prussian Blue and Atelier Interactive Mixing White (pearl/titanium) followed until I was happy with the result.

The painting has been sealed with Atelier Interactive Fast Medium/Fixer.
